# List Messages

GET https://api.rray.app/v1/messages

List the workspace's messages, newest first, as a cursor-paginated page. Filter by
`id`, aggregate `status` (repeat the parameter for several), `recipient` and
`created_at`; filters are combined with AND and are fingerprinted into the cursor, so
keep the query identical while walking a list.

Reference: https://docs.rray.app/api/api-reference/messages/list

## Authentication

- `Authorization` header (bearer token, required) — A workspace key (`rray_live_…`, bound to one workspace) or the account's platform key. Platform keys name the target workspace with `RRay-Workspace-Id`. See [Credentials](https://docs.rray.app/docs/concepts/authentication).

## Request

### Query parameters

- `id` (string, optional, nullable) — Return the message with this exact id (the id returned by POST /v1/messages).
- `status` (list of enum, optional, nullable) — Only return messages whose aggregate status is one of these. Repeat the param for several (`status=queued&status=delivered`).
  - Allowed values: `accepted`, `queued`, `delivered`, `bounced`, `deferred`, `failed`, `mixed`
- `recipient` (string, optional, nullable) — Only return messages addressed to this exact address on any channel (to, cc, or bcc).
- `created_at` (list of datetime, optional, nullable) — Filter by creation time (RFC 3339). Pass 1 or 2 values: - **Two values** → an inclusive range; order does not matter (`created_at=2026-07-01T00:00:00Z&created_at=2026-07-31T23:59:59Z`). - **One full timestamp** → exact match (`created_at=2026-07-12T09:30:00Z`). - **One date, no time** → that whole calendar day (`created_at=2026-07-12`). Include a timezone offset for local-time filtering (`2026-07-12T00:00:00+07:00`); a value without an offset is interpreted as UTC. To show a user's day in their timezone, send the two local-day boundaries with their offset.
- `limit` (integer, optional, default: 20) — Rows per page (1–100, default 20).
- `cursor` (string, optional, nullable) — Opaque pagination token. Omit for the first page (newest rows first). To page, copy `pagination.next_cursor` (older rows) or `pagination.prev_cursor` (newer rows) from the previous response into this parameter — do not build it yourself: the walk direction and the active filter set are encoded in the token, and reusing a cursor with a different filter set is rejected (`validation.cursor_filters_mismatch`).

### Headers

- `RRay-Workspace-Id` (string, optional, nullable) — The workspace to act on. Required with a platform key; rejected with a workspace key, which already carries its workspace — a matching value is rejected too, rather than silently ignored. An id that is not yours returns `404 workspace.not_found`.

## Types

### MessageResponse

- `id` (string, required) — Identifier of the message.
- `status` (enum, required) — Aggregate status across every delivery of this message; `mixed` when its deliveries disagree.
  - Allowed values: `accepted`, `queued`, `delivered`, `bounced`, `deferred`, `failed`, `mixed`
- `from` (string, required) — Sender address as sent.
- `workspace_id` (string, required) — Workspace this message was sent from.
- `created_at` (datetime, required) — When the message was accepted (RFC 3339, UTC).
- `object` ("message", optional, default: message) — Always `message`.
- `subject` (string, optional, nullable) — Subject line as sent.
- `deliveries` (list of DeliveryBreakdown, optional, default: []) — One entry per recipient address, with that recipient's own status.
- `attachments` (list of AttachmentMeta, optional, default: []) — Descriptor of each attachment as sent. The bytes themselves are not retained.

### ListMeta

``total``/``total_capped`` are present on the entry page only (no COUNT is executed while walking cursors).

- `limit` (integer, required) — Rows per page this response used.
- `has_next` (boolean, required) — Older rows exist — request `next_cursor` to continue.
- `has_prev` (boolean, required) — Newer rows exist — request `prev_cursor` to go back.
- `total` (integer, optional, nullable) — Total matching rows, capped at 10 000. Present on the first page only; `null` while paging with a cursor.
- `total_capped` (boolean, optional, default: false) — `true` when the real total exceeds the 10 000 cap (`total` is the cap).
- `next_cursor` (string, optional, nullable) — Pass as `cursor` for the next (older) page; `null` at the end of the list.
- `prev_cursor` (string, optional, nullable) — Pass as `cursor` for the previous (newer) page; `null` at the start of the list.

### ValidationIssue

One failed field — an entry of the ``invalid_params`` array (a request field the caller can fix). Shared by schema-validation failures (pydantic) and field-scoped business rules (e.g. a duplicate recipient), so the two cannot drift in shape.

- `field` (string, required) — Path of the request field that failed, e.g. `to`, `attachments[0]`.
- `message` (string, required) — Human-readable explanation of this field error (safe to surface in a UI).
- `kind` (string, required) — Machine-readable CAUSE token (finer than the error `code`): a pydantic type (`missing`, `string_too_long`, `value_error`) for a schema failure, or a business cause — `duplicate`, `invalid_base64`, `unsupported_scheme`, `missing_host`, `unresolvable_host`, `private_address`, `size_exceeded`, `plan_restricted`. Branch on this, not `message`.

### StateError

One failed resource-state precondition — an entry of the ``state_errors`` array. Unlike ``invalid_params`` it points at a resource/account state (not a request field), e.g. an unverified sender domain or insufficient credits.

- `resource` (string, required) — The resource whose state blocked the request, e.g. `sender_domain`.
- `message` (string, required) — Human-readable explanation of the state problem (safe to surface in a UI).
- `kind` (string, required) — Machine-readable CAUSE token (finer than the error `code`), e.g. `unverified`.
- `resource_id` (string, optional, nullable) — Identifier of that resource, e.g. `example.com`.

### DeliveryBreakdown

One recipient's copy in a message response — no internal per-delivery id. ``role``/``status`` are closed enums (validated at runtime), so generated SDKs get real enum types and can exhaustively switch on delivery state.

- `address` (string, required) — The recipient address this delivery is for, without any display name.
- `role` (enum, required) — Which channel the address was given on.
  - Allowed values: `to`, `cc`, `bcc`
- `status` (enum, required) — This recipient's own delivery status.
  - Allowed values: `accepted`, `queued`, `delivered`, `bounced`, `deferred`, `failed`

### AttachmentMeta

Attachment metadata surfaced on the message (GET). Bytes are pass-through and never stored, so only the descriptor is retained.

- `filename` (string, required) — Name as sent.
- `content_type` (string, required) — MIME type as sent.
- `size` (integer, required) — Size in bytes of the attached file.
